Recycling and Waste Reduction During Move-Out

Jumbo Drop is changing this year. Click here to read more about the change.

Here is a list of what we are collecting. Please put things in the proper boxes.

Each year we collect food donations which are given to charity. Some years we have worked with the Boston Food Bank, and some the Somerville Homeless Coalition. We donate to whichever charity can make arrangements to pick up the food and that changes each year.

Please do not put opened food in the donation box! It will be thrown away.

Crutches and air casts go to the Tufts Althetics Department.

Clothing hangers are collected and distributed free at the begining of the fall semester.

NO WIRE HANGERS PLEASE.

Ever wonder why Carmichael often runs out of bowls?!

Please return Dining Hall dishes and utencils that are floating around your dorm.

Books are donated to various charities. In the past we have worked with Better World Books and the Prison Book Program.

This year we have committed the books to More Than Words, a non-profit bookstore and cafe run by youth who are court-involved,
homeless or in foster care. The youth gain self-confidence and employment skills by working as a team to manage their own retail and online book business and cafe.

Tufts textbooks go back to the bookstore.

The destination of donated school supplies is still unknown. We may consider redistributing them internally, either to staff or for free at the beginning of the fall semester. There are several youth organizations who we are also considering.

Carpets will be recycled, not reused. If you have a great carpet- keep it for next year or gift it to a friend.

Electronics are recycled through Allied Computer Brokers.

NO LAMPS PLEASE.

Clothing will be sold to a clothing reseller. We will recieve a few pennies per pound. The proceeds will be used to have the linens professionally laundered so they can be donated to charities in need. Potential recipients of the clean linens are homeless shelters, refugee placement agencies and domestic violence shelters.

NO PILLOWS PLEASE!

About ending the Jumbo Drop program

The Jumbo Drop process required an enormous amount of work to collect, sort and transport donations. While a crew of about 15 people worked to collect at move-out, over 100 custodians were busy cleaning elsewhere. That means many recyclable things ended up in the trash before the Jumbo Drop crew could intercept them. For that reason we have decided to utilize our labor more effectively by reducing trash overall through recycling. For example, where we might have collected 50 reusable carpets, hundreds more were ending up in the trash. We anticipate making a better environmental impact by recovering more recycling from the trash this year.

Sorting areas and secure storage at Tufts are very difficult to find. Most years we had to find a new location, which was not easy. Often the areas were not secure from troublemakers or the elements. Typically some JD things were compromised by rainwater or intruders.

Many items broke during the Jumbo Drop process. This caused another laborious round of sorting and logistics. Click here to read a former Jumbo Drop student’s overview of the situation.
