Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates

Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University offers the ECFVG Evaluated Clinical Year program for graduates of veterinary colleges outside the United States and Canada. The program provides an opportunity for qualified candidates to obtain evaluated clinical experience under supervision of our clinical faculty.

Note: Beginning July 1, 2007, the Evaluated Clinical Year will be considered an Instructional Clinical Year and will no longer satisfy the Step 4 requirements for ECFVG certification. September 1, 2006 will be the latest start date for a candidate to begin an Evaluated Clinical Year at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and complete the year by July 1, 2007. Applications for an Instructional Clinical Year at the Cummings School are invited from candidates who wish to begin the program after September 1, 2006.


Program

A 39-week program of Supervised Clinical Evaluation is offered. The program consists of the following rotations, which are completed along with our fourth-year students:

  • Small Animal Medicine (4 weeks)
  • Small Animal Surgery (4 weeks)
  • Large Animal Medicine (4 weeks)
  • Large Animal Surgery (4 weeks)
  • Ambulatory/Field Service (4 weeks)
  • Small Animal Critical Care (4 weeks)
  • Anesthesia (3 weeks)
  • Clinical/Anatomical Pathology (3 weeks)
  • Radiology (3 weeks)
  • Comparative Medicine (2 weeks)
  • Small Animal Subspecialities (4 week)

Requirements

Candidates for the Supervised Clinical Evaluation program at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University must be registered with the ECFVG and complete all requirements of the ECFVG prior to application to our program. The requirements include:

  1. Graduation from an AVMA-listed college of veterinary medicine

  2. Completion of English language requirements

  3. Successful completion of the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE)

Selection

There is no deadline for applications. Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis. Students may begin the program at various times throughout the year. Approximately 5-10 candidates are selected to attend an interview, at their expense, at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University.

Tuition & Financial Aid

The tuition for the ECFVG program is $25,459 for the 2005-2006 academic year. Tuition is payable in full prior to the start of the program. There is no financial aid available for the ECFVG program.

The Trustees of Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University reserve the right to change tuition and fees or to establish additional fees or charges for special features or services whenever, in their opinion, such practice is deemed advisable. The earliest possible notification of changes in tuition and other fees will be provided.

Health Insurance

Participants in the program are required to maintain their own health insurance.

The completed application must be accompanied by:

  1. A nonrefundable $60 application fee in the form of a bank check or money order made payable to Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University.

  2. A photocopy of the applicant's veterinary school diploma.

  3. An essay, not exceeding 500 words, on the subject of the applicant's career choice, including why the applicant desires to practice in the United States and why he/she is applying to Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University.

  4. A current curriculum vitae or résumé.

  5. Official transcripts from the veterinary school and undergraduate institution(s) attended by the applicant, with an attested English translation, if applicable.

  6. Official test results for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Test of Spoken English (TSE), and the Test of Written English (TWE), or for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or evidence of having completed three years of high school in the United States, or if the applicant is from an English-speaking country, a copy of his/her high school diploma from that country.

  7. Three letters of evaluation, written in English, from faculty members under whom the applicant has studied in veterinary school and/or from veterinarians with whom the applicant has worked.

  8. A letter from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) stating that the applicant has passed the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE), including the dates taken and scores received.
