Application Requirements

The dean of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine admits applicants for each new class from recommendations of the Committee on Admissions. The committee carefully reviews applications and selects those applicants considered most capable of excelling as veterinary medical students at Tufts and who possess the greatest potential to develop skills that will serve the needs of the community and the profession.

Students applying for the DVM, MS, or the PhD must submit the following materials:

  • Application for Admission

  • Application Fee of $60 (An additional $15 will be charged for applicants using hard copies of the application. The application fee for the PhD program is $75.)

  • Academic Transcripts from all previously attended institutions
    You must submit official transcripts for all colleges and universities you attended. This includes separate official transcripts for all foreign exchange or semester abroad programs as well as any transfer credit from other institutions that appears on your primary transcript. If you are currently enrolled in an academic program, please submit an official transcript of work completed to date. Do not postpone the submission of your transcript until the current semester is completed. Rather, send an updated transcript when your grades become available.   • Official GRE Scores
    All applicants are required to take the General Test of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE). The latest acceptable examination is the computer adaptive test taken by the end of October. GRE scores are valid for five years; the exam must have been taken within five years of application. Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine recipient code for the GRE is 3893.   • Veterinary, animal, and/or health science experience
    This experience may include veterinary, agricultural, research, human health, and/or biomedical setting. Such experience should be of appropriate breadth and depth and should entail more than having provided routine care and feeding of companion animals or family pets.

  • Three Letters of Evaluation
    Letters of evaluation, which should be requested from persons who know you well, understand academic and professional demands, and have had the opportunity to evaluate your personal qualities and potential as a veterinarian and veterinary medical student. Three letters must be submitted, one from each of the following areas:

    • Pre-professional: a pre-veterinary, premedical, or pre-professional committee or from a dean, advisor, or faculty member.

    • Academic: a faculty member in your major or who taught you a required preprofessional science course. Applicants with graduate work should have an appropriate graduate school faculty member write this letter.

    • Veterinarian/Biomedical Scientist: a veterinarian, research scientist, or project leader with whom you have had considerable experience.

  • Extracurricular Activities
    School related activities, community activities, committees, leadership roles, and employment not related to animals.

  • Two short essays (250-400 words)
