Greg Krane Student Profile
Choosing the Cummings School
I was an AVM student during the summer between my junior and senior years of high school. At the progam, I found out about the early acceptance BS/DVM program with WPI. Due to how much I enjoyed my time during AVM, I applied to the program. Once I was accepted, the decision to enroll was easy. I'm glad to see that I did make the right decision.
Flexibility of Selectives
I had some great selective opportunities. First semester in first year, I worked with Dr. Kirker-Head in the Orthopeadic Research Lab. Second semester in first year, I worked with Mike Mooney, the Tufts farrier. In second year, during the fall, I was an anatomy mentor to the first year class, and I also did a selective in radiology. That spring, I did a selective in the small animal medicine department. In third year fall, I did a selective with the cardiology group. Over my time here, I was also able to be a student tech in the ICU/ER, and do an internship at a pharmaceutical company over both summers.
A Meaningful Hospital Experience
I was helping to take care of a cat in acute renal failure. Unfortunately, we were unable to help the cat overcome this disease, and we had to make the humane decision to euthanize. This was my first patient at Tufts that I lost, and the first time I experienced the loss of a patient with whom I was closely involved over a period of time. The following week, a thank you card was sent by the owners to the doctor on the case and to me, thanking us for the personalized care and support for them and their cat during such a difficult time. It was at this moment that I was reminded that our job, at its most fundamental level, is to preserve the relationship between an animal and its owner. Even when we unfortunately lose these pets, the manner in which we provide care can have a positive impact on the owners. When I have a hard day, I remind myself of this fact, and it makes me appreciative of having the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of pets and their owners.
