Frequently Asked Questions
About AVM
What qualifications do admitted applicants usually have?
Middle School students are admitted on a first-come, first-served
basis. This means that as long as your application is complete and
the session is not full you will be admitted. High School, College,
and Adult applicants usually have a B+ or better grade point average,
strong science grades, expressed interest in learning more about
the veterinary profession, and significant animal related experience.
How many hands-on animal activities are there?
AVM is a mix of lectures, hands-on activities, discussions, and laboratories designed to give participants a better understanding of the veterinary profession and veterinary school. AVM is not an animal camp; participants will have some contact with animals including large and small animal handling demonstrations. Please see the sample schedules posted on our website or call our office for further information about animal related activities.
Can I pay the tuition deposit/balance with a personal check?
No. Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted and will be
returned. Please make money orders or bank checks payable to "Trustees
of Tufts College."
My fall grades do not come out until December/
January. Do I need to submit an additional official transcript?
Please submit a copy of your official transcripts as soon as possible.
When your fall grades come out, you may submit a copy of your report
card, or have your guidance counselor send an unofficial copy of
the updated grades.
Should I send my letters of recommendation with
my application, or must they be sent directly from the person writing
the letter?
Please use the online application for your letters.
Do I need to take the GRE's/SAT's to complete the AVM application?
No. Standardized test scores are not required.
I am a college student. Do I really need to submit
my high school transcripts?
If you have completed 2 full-time semesters of college, you do not
need to submit your high school transcripts.
I am over 23 years old, but the Adult session dates do not work with my schedule. Can I apply to a college session?
Yes, please call our office to discuss differences between college/adult sessions.
Can I apply to both the Residential High School Program and the Day High School Program?
No. You can only apply for one session at a time. If you are waitlisted for the High School Residential program, you may contact us to discuss the option of also being considered for the High School Day program.
I was accepted to AVM, but I have to withdraw my application. Can I get my money back?
Our program is highly competitive, and our tuition is non-refundable. We will do what we can to find someone to fill your space. However if we cannot find someone to fill your space, or if you need to withdraw within three weeks of the program start date, we will be unable to refund your tuition.
I have been out of school for awhile, and have lost contact with professors. May I substitute employers for letters of recommendation?
Please contact our office if this situation applies to you.
I am a middle school student and have already attended the program. Can I apply again this summer for another middle school session?
We do not recommend that you attend the program twice as a middle school student, because we hope that the program was successful in giving you an introduction to veterinary medicine. We encourage you to continue finding new ways to be involved with animals and wait to apply to the high school program.
I am a high school student interested in attending the high school session of AVM again. What should I do?
We recommend that you wait until you are in college to consider re-applying. Please call our office if this situation applies to you.
About Admission and Financial Aid Decisions
I have already applied to veterinary school. Is this program right for me?
AVM is intended to help confirm that veterinary medicine is the right career path for you. If you have already applied to veterinary school, we feel that you have already chosen your desired career path. We are happy to talk with you about this situation, so please call our office.
Is it possible to re-apply?
Yes, we encourage you to reapply! Please provide us with an updated activities list and updated official transcripts. If you have paid the application fee within the last three years, you do not need to pay it again.
Is there a waiting list?
Yes. When a session becomes full, you may apply to the waiting list. Applicants who are not admitted into the program may be offered a spot on the waiting list.
What are my chances of being admitted from the
waiting list?
Spaces do become available every year, and we encourage applicants
to apply to the waiting list.
When will I hear from AVM about my admission decision?
Middle School students are admitted on a first-come, first-served
basis. You can expect to hear confirmation of registration within
a few weeks of applying. For high school, college and adult applicants,
we begin making admission decisions on a rolling basis in mid-February.
We continue to accept applications until all spaces are filled.
Please do not hesitate to call our office for updates.
How do you make Financial Aid decisions?
All Financial Aid decisions are based on need. The postmark deadline
is March 7. Financial aid decisions are made separately from
admission decisions. We encourage applicants to research possible
local sources of funding, and to talk about funding options with
guidance counselors.
About the AVM Program
Where do students stay while attending AVM?
Students admitted to the High School residential programs stay at
a local college and are bussed to and from Tufts. Middle School,
High School Day, College, and Adult students need to provide their
own transportation and accommodations. Click
here* for a list of local accommodations.
Are High School residential students supervised at Assumption College?
Yes! Students are supervised at all times by trained program assistants who are also veterinary students.
What do High School residential students do during weeknights and weekends?
We have several fun and laid-back social activities planned for
students including movie nights, bowling and pool-time. Students
also have free time for sports, socializing, and rest. During the
weekends, students go on animal-related field trips. Please contact
us if you have specific questions.
I am a guidance counselor, career counselor, or veterinarian. How can I get more information?
Please call or email, so that we can put you on the appropriate mailing list for posters, brochures, and updates.
