Since 1980 Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University has operated a satellite clinic in Woodstock, CT that delivers round the clock ambulatory service for a variety of food and fiber animals and horses in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Tufts Ambulatory Service (TAS) provides quality veterinary service to clients, superior education to students, support for agriculture in the community, and professional growth for its faculty and staff. The overall goal of the Clinic is to complement the didactic and in-house clinical training provided to students in our hospitals with a practical hands-on approach in a setting typical of most large animal practices in New England.
The leased house that the service has occupied since 1980 can no longer accommodate a staff which has quadrupled based on the high demand for services. A new facility will allow TAS to provide veterinary services in an environment that is safe for the patients, staff, and students.
The 6,000 sq. ft. facility is sited on a 25-acre parcel of land on New Sweden Rd. in Woodstock, conveniently less than a mile from the current location. While five acres will be developed for the new building, the balance will be preserved as open space with a conversation restriction. This will maintain the integrity of the clinic's environs and the agricultural character of the former Woodstock location. We broke ground on the $1.7 million project in July 2007 and plan to complete construction by the end of the calendar year. The new facility features a reception area, pharmacy, conference center, offices, storage room, lockers, laundry facilities, and a haul-in area for animal examination and outpatient surgery.
