General Research Interest
Botulinum toxin is the etiologic agent responsible for the disease botulism, which is characterized by peripheral neuromuscular blockade. There are 7 distinct but related neurotoxins, A through G, produced by different strains of the clostridial bacillus. Botulinum toxin poses a major bioweapon threat because of its extreme potency and lethality. There is a need to generate a pharmaceutical to prevent or treat botulism. The research activity has been focused on:
- Development of antitoxin therapy against all possible routes of botulinum toxin intoxication
- Development of therapeutic agents against botulism using high throughput screening
Research Sponsor Interest
- Federally Funded Research
