About the Hospital for Large Animals

Located 45 minutes west of Boston, the Hospital for Large Animals at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine is the premiere facility in New England for the care of horses, alpacas, llamas, goats, pigs, sheep and other large animals. Since our founding in 1979, we have offered consultation, referral, emergency veterinary services and 24-hour care for your animals.

Veterinary Services

The Hospital for Large Animals has grown to be one of the largest referral hospitals in the Northeast, yet we strive to provide the same level of personalized, compassionate care that our clients have come to expect. Our facility consists of over 40,000 square feet of hospital space, in which you have ready access to the region's most powerful diagnostic imaging capabilities.

Our clinical services—including a modern surgical suites, intensive care unit, and sports medicine clinic—allow our clinical teams to diagnose and treat difficult and complex conditions in our clients' animals. Attached to the hospital is a modern pathology laboratory that provides diagnostic information daily for our patients. The hospital has begun construction on a new facility to house animals with infectious diseases, which will allow us to isolate sick animals for better infection control.

We are proud to have the only high-strength MRI equipment for large animals in the region as well as X-ray, ultrasound and a state-of-the-art nuclear scintigraphy suite. As part of our efforts to continually upgrade our facilities, we are also installing a new 16-slice CT scanner.

Faculty and Staff

Behind the scenes, your animal receives the advantage of carefully orchestrated, team-based care. Our board-certified faculty specialists, dedicated staff and students are energized to provide the very best in quality care with compassion. This is because the veterinarians at the Hospital for Large Animals are not only highly trained specialists in their fields, they are animal lovers as well.
