Lois Wetmore – SD, DVM, MS, DACVA
One of three board-certified anesthesiologists at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine's Foster Hospital for Small Animals and Hospital for Large Animals, Dr. Lois Wetmore brings a special interest in pain management to her work with the hospitals' surgical and medical patients. In addition to clinical work, she serves as one of the faculty members on Tufts' Pain Management and Referral Service and on the Grafton Community Advisory Group. She also consults on cases at the Tufts Wildlife Clinic and for various animals at New England's zoos.
Dr. Wetmore wanted to be a veterinarian as far back as she can remember—inspired, in part, by the dog she had as a child in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her natural love of math and science compelled her to pursue veterinary medicine, despite few female role models in the field at the time. After earning her bachelor's from Utah State University, followed by a DVM at Colorado State University and an MS and veterinary anesthesiology residency at Michigan State University, she went on to pursue a doctor of science degree from Harvard University's School of Public Health. However, she missed veterinary medicine, and when the opportunity came to join Tufts' faculty, she jumped at it.
Dr. Wetmore currently teaches in the third year anesthesia course, lectures on general anesthetics in the second year pharmacology course and acts as a facilitator for the Problem Based Learning course and the Accelerated Clinical Excellence (ACE) course. Her clinical patients come in all shapes and sizes—ranging from a 1.5-pound, six-week-old Bichon Frise with a luxated shoulder to Kenda, the 550-pound polar bear at the Ecotarium in nearby Worcester, MA.
Dr. Wetmore lives in Grafton two dogs and two cats. She has a teenage son, Noah, and in her free time she enjoys hiking, reading, listening to music, singing and playing the guitar.
Dr. Wetmore's academic and research interests can be found on her faculty profile.
