Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine – DVM
Steven Rowell

As the Associate Dean for Clinical Programs and Hospital Director of the Hospital for Large Animals, Dr. Steven Rowell is the lead administrator for the clinical operations at the Cummings School.

Dr. Rowell was drawn to the field by a desire to be involved in medicine, but have more flexibility than typically exists in the human medical world. He says he spent a lot of time working in a veterinary clinic to understand veterinary medicine and found that working with the animals and clients was very fulfilling. Among his greatest accomplishments, Dr. Rowell administered the Cummings School's Oral Rabies Vaccine Program on Cape Cod, directed operations of the Tufts Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for ten years, and helped the Cummings School's hospitals succeed as academic referral centers for veterinary colleagues in practice.

What he likes most about working at the Cummings School is the people. Our dedicated faculty and staff challenge me each day with new ideas. Their commitment to our patients and the profession is astounding, Dr. Rowell says. It's fun to work with smart motivated people. He also serves as a facilitator for the first-year Problem-Based Learning course and lectures on hospital management. He also mentors fourth year students, interns, and residents.

Dr. Rowell has been married to his wife, Trudy, for 35 years. They have two sons: Adam, an electrical engineer studying toward his PhD at Stanford University, and Seth, a civil engineer working for a firm in Boston. When not working, Dr. Rowell enjoys spending time with his wife, woodworking, and being outdoors—walking, hiking, skiing, and gardening. He and Trudy reside in Westborough, Massachusetts.

Dr. Rowell's academic and research interests can be found on his faculty profile.
