Internal Medicine

Board certified in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, our faculty lead the Internal Medicine Service at the Hospital for Large Animals. Supporting them are trained technicians, interns, residents, students and staff within a state-of-the-art facility for providing diagnosis and advanced patient care.

The service handles a variety of clinical cases. Equine patients—approximately 85% of the caseload—range from performance animals to beloved pets, from newborn foals to geriatric horses. Most of our other patients—camelids (alpacas and llamas), small ruminants (such as sheep and goats), and pigs—tend to be companion rather than production animals. Our clinicians treat problems of the internal organ systems including respiratory (pneumonia), neurological, gastrointestinal (colic, diarrhea), renal (kidney), infectious diseases and other conditions that need medical attention.

We provide intensive care for around-the-clock observation and treatment of critical patients. Our neonatal unit treats about 80 newborns each year. It is equipped to provide respiratory and intravenous support to the critically ill neonate. Our isolation facility is equipped to treat patients with infectious diseases such as strangles, equine herpes 1 (EHV1) and salmonella.
