We require that new workstations/laptops be purchased
with a 4-year hardware support agreement. Laptops will be ordered
with 4 year hardware support (CompleteCare for Dell laptops).
A major challenge that faces ITS is the standardinzing
of hardware and software used on desktops/laptops. ITS realizes
that various individuals/departments will have special needs that
are not resolved by the recommended standards, yet it is important
to recognize that adhering to standards will result in improved
customer service for all our clients, which results in faster resolution
of problems. Maintaining standards provides TCSVM the following
benefits:
The primary considerations for each hardware
configuration are:
• Ease of connectivity to the campus network.
• Ease of connectivity to external systems and organizations.
• Consistent performance of all integrated components in our
network environment.
• Industry leader with an established track record in manufacturing,
service, and sales.
The advantages of hardware standards are:
• Desktop workstations/laptops have sufficient resources to
run current software products at adequate performance levels.
• Resources are not wasted on inadequate or outdated equipment.
• Software installations and restores after critical failures
streamlined.
• Standard images maintained centrally which results in timely
resolutions to those issues which require a hard drive to be formatted
(virus, Trojan, etc.).
• Simplified budgeting and purchasing.
Hardware and software that function normally
in a standalone environment may not work in a network infrastructure.
Although a department may save money on less costly hardware, the
device chosen may prove to be more expensive in support costs. The
ITS department will periodically review and revise these standards
based on emerging desktop technologies and software development.
ITS only supports Tufts-owned hardware.
ITS does not support personal-owned hardware. ITS does not support
third party hardware/software. If you have specialty hardware/software,
you must contact the vendor for support/configuration.
