About the New England Regional Biosafety Laboratory

The New England Regional Biosafety Laboratory (NE-RBL) serves as an important regional resource for conducting research to improve the means of detecting, preventing and treating infectious diseases that occur naturally in the environment and are transmitted from animals to humans. Using this new facility, Tufts highly-trained, internationally renowned researchers and their collaborators are:

  • Gaining a better understanding of the ways in which bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites in animals cause infection in humans.
  • Helping develop vaccines, treatments and cures for infectious diseases.

Their research and discoveries are helping to improve our health and well-being by:

  • Leading the quest to prevent, treat and even eradicate the diseases that threaten our society worldwide.
  • Facilitating regional collaboration with other area universities, life science companies and teaching hospitals.
  • Working on infectious diseases and diagnostics and therapies against biodefense agents.
