Sensory for smell

Assessment
Expose patient to an aromatic substance and assess behavioral response. Examples of substances include: eugenol, benzaldehyde, alcohol, and food. One should not use irritants (ammonia or tobacco) as these may stimulate the trigeminal nerve in the nasal mucosa. This nerve is not commonly assessed.
