Cranial Nerves CNVI (Abducent Nerve)
024-cnVI

CN VI (Abducent Nerve)

Function
Eye movement and position through innervation of the lateral rectus and retractor bulbi muscles
Assessment

May assess voluntary eye movement or elicit vestibular eye movements by moving the head laterally, medially, up and down (see eye movement). A normal patient will exhibit normal nystagmus, with the fast pace in the direction of the movement. Medial strabismus may be seen with CN VI dysfunction.

Corneal reflex evaluates this nerve as well.
