CN IX (Glossopharyngeal
Nerve) and CN X (Vagus Nerve)
•
Function
These two nerves are combined because of their close relationship.
Together they control the sensory and motor innervation to the pharynx.
•
Assessment
Gag or swallow reflex – elicited by manipulating the caudal
aspect of the throat
NOTE: Gloves should be worn, as rabies cannot be excluded in cases
with swallowing defects.
A history or notation during the observation portion of the exam
of dysphagia or excessive salivation may be noted.
