Funding

Tuition, Fees, and Financial Aid

All students are charged tuition each semester of the program. Tuition for the year is payable according to Tufts University guidelines. For a first or second year student enrolled in the program during the academic year 2005-2006, tuition is $20,263 ($10,132.50/semester). After a student passes his or her preliminary exam, the tuition is reduced to $5,000/year ($2,500/semester) for their remaining years in the program. All tuitions are subject to yearly increases. Students are always encouraged to look for external sources of funding.

Students are eligible for a yearly PhD tuition waiver through an Agnes Varis PhD Fellowship. Since funds are limited, students must apply for this fellowship each year. In addition, students are generally awarded a stipend from their mentor's research grant to support their pursuit of a PhD in Comparative Biomedical Sciences. The stipend amount for the 2004-2005 academic year was $20,000/year. Stipend amounts are based on NIH guidelines. Funds are also generally available to cover health and dental insurance costs; however, students are required to pay the Health Administrative Fee.

External Funding

For students applying for external funding, it is important to note that in order to make support available for as many graduate students as possible, Tufts reserves the right to decrease both tuition and/or stipend awards if students are being provided with both internal and external sources of support. At the beginning of each year, students are required to disclose whether they are receiving outside funds. The student is notified if any funding changes will be made.
