As all dog owners know, when your dog dies, you lose a part
of your family. Now there is growing recognition that people
who lose a companion animal not only grieve -- but grieve
intensely. Over the past decade, various support services
for grieving pet owners have sprung up across the country,
including pet-loss support hotlines established at four veterinary
schools. The hotlines are staffed primarily by trained veterinary
students who offer grieving owners an empathetic ear and nonjudgmental
support, feedback, and referrals.
The hotlines benefit people on both ends of the phone. Student
volunteers gain real-life experience . . .
