Student Research Training Programs
12-Month Research Training Program: Hypothesis Driven Research (NCRR Sponsored)
Program Director: Dr. Robert S. Bridges, Ph.D.
It is crucial for 21st century veterinarians to acquire the scientific skills and technical training together with the conceptual framework to participate both as independent researchers and collaborators to meet the projected research needs in biomedical sciences. The objective of this training program is to provide bright, and highly-motivated veterinary students with a one year, in-depth research experience in a productive and active research setting that uses animal models to develop skills at hypothesis-based, biomedical research. The longer-term objective is to make this training experience a launching pad for career involvement in research for our veterinary students. (Learn More)
Agnes Varis Summer Research Scholars
Program Director: M. Sawkat Anwer, DMVH, Ph.D.
Through the generosity of Agnes Varis, the main goal of this program is for each of three DVM students to gain research experience working with a faculty member in one of the academic units across the university on the Medford campus, Boston campus, or at a Tufts-affiliated hospital. (Learn More)
D.V.M./M.S. in Comparative Biomedical Sciences (NIH Sponsored)
Program Director: Dr. Robert S. Bridges, Ph.D.
This combined 5-year DVM/MS program offers Tufts University veterinary students the opportunity to gain intensive research training in biomedical research within one of the laboratories of program faculty funded by the National Institutes of Health, the United States Department of Agriculture, or the National Science Foundation. Students take a year out from the veterinary curriculum to train intensively in biomedical research with a faculty mentor. This program is supported by a NIH training grant from the National Center for Research Resources as well as by Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. (Learn More)
D.V.M./M.S. in Laboratory Animal Medicine
Program Director: Angie Warner, DVM, D.Sc.
There is a need for veterinarians with clinical and management skills to design and implement high quality programs for biomedical research facilities and to provide guidance in overall management of such facilities. The combined degree program in laboratory animal medicine is designed to provide bright and highly motivated veterinary students an opportunity to study laboratory animal medicine and animal resource management in conjunction with the DVM curriculum at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. D.V.M./Master of Public Health Offered in conjunction with Tufts University School of Medicine
Program Directors: Anthony Schlaff, MD, MPH, FACPM and Joann Lindenmayer, DVM, MPH
The DVM/MPH program is designed to prepare veterinary students for a career in public health, or to better apply the principles of epidemiology and public health to more traditional forms of practice or research. With its emphasis on human and animal diseases, accuracy in research, and rigorous application of statistical methods, the combined DVM/MPH degree would provide an excellent foundation for students wishing to pursue public health positions in government and positions in research, international health, private industry, and academia. Merck Merial Veterinary Scholars
TCSVM has been awarded a grant through the Merck Merial Veterinary Scholars Program. Funding for the 2007 program has been provided by the Merck Company Foundation, Merck Research Laboratories, and Merial. The program is designed to expose talented veterinary students to opportunities inherent in a research career. This hands-on experience will increase confidence in pursuing research activities, and provide the skills necessary to critically evaluate research findings and their potential applications within the scope of clinical careers. The growing recognition of the complex interdependence of animal and human health has created a special need to train veterinarians in research. (Learn More)
Summer Research Training Program (NIH Sponsored)
Program Director: M. Sawkat Anwer, DMVH, Ph.D.
This program is intended to help students crystallize their interest in research, to make them aware of their research potential, and to familiarize themselves with the opportunities inherent in a research career by exposing them to an active biomedical research environment. Student will learn how to evaluate a scientific article, design an experiment, organize and critically analyze data, translate data into hypothesis, and transmit research information in writing and speech. Veterinary Research Training Program for National Defense
TCSVM has been awarded a four year (2006-2010) grant from the U.S. Army Medical Command for veterinary research manpower development for national defense. The goal of this program is to increase the number of veterinarians trained in research generally, and in public health related research for planning and implementation of a response to bioterrorism and in assessment of environmental threats.
