Student Research Training Programs

Agnes Varis Summer Research Scholars

M. Sawkat Anwer, DMVH, Ph.D. Program Director, NIH Training Program

This program is made possible by a generous gift from Agnes Varis, a member of the Cummings Veterinary School Board of Overseers and a member of the University Board of Trustees.

The main goal of this program is for each of three DVM students to gain research experience working with a faculty member in one of the academic units across the university on the Medford campus, Boston campus, or at a Tufts-affiliated hospital. Cummings Veterinary School faculty members are not eligible as mentors, but are encouraged to help students find mentors on other campuses. The intent of this program is for our DVM students to serve as ambassadors to work across disciplines within the university to knit the academic units and campuses of the university together, and hence the exclusion of veterinary school faculty as mentors.

This program will be similar to our current NIH summer research program with the exception that all 1st and 2nd DVM students are eligible irrespective of nationality. The stipend level will be $6,000 for each student summer research scholar. In addition, each mentor will receive $2,000.00 for expenses related to the project. Interested students should contact potential mentors and submit a proposal (using the application form for NIH Summer Research Program) to Dr. Sawkat Anwer, Department of Biomedical Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine. The deadline for the proposal is January 31, of each year.

If you should need further information, please contact Dr. Sawkat Anwer, email: sawkat.anwer@tufts.edu.
