Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Internship #2

The program consists of 42 weeks of intensive experience on the E/CC service at the Foster Hospital for Small Animals at Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. Assigned shifts will focus on the emergency service although a limited number of weeks will be allocated to the critical care service. The successful applicant will have primary case responsibility during this time for those cases, as well as secondary responsibility for the other cases housed within the ER, ICU and general patient care areas. The E/CC fellow will be expected to assist with the clinical teaching of the 3rd and 4th year veterinary students, as well as the rotating interns. Some on-call time for management of critically ill or injured animals requiring mechanical ventilation is required (1-3 days/month). The majority of shifts will include weekends and/or evenings. The fellow is expected to prepare a manuscript suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal and to attend 2-4 hour of CE/week.

The remaining 8 weeks of the program will include 2 weeks vacation, and 6 weeks on out-rotations of the successful candidate’s choice, with available out-rotations including medicine, surgery, cardiology, anesthesia and diagnostic imaging. If preferred, instead of the out-rotations, a 6 week out block for independent research may be coordinated and scheduled.
