Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Internship
The program consists of 42 weeks of intensive experience on the ECC service at the Foster Hospital for Small Animals at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. Assigned shifts will focus on the emergency service although a limited number of weeks will be allocated to the critical care service. The successful applicant will have primary case responsibility during this time for those cases, as well as secondary responsibility for the other cases housed within the ER, ICU and general patient care areas. The ECC fellow will be expected to assist with the clinical teaching of the third and fourth year DVM candidates, as well as the rotating interns. Some on-call time for management of critically ill or injured animals requiring mechanical ventilation is required—usually one to three days per month. The majority of shifts will include weekends and or evenings. The fellow is expected to prepare a manuscript suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal and to attend two to four hours of CE per week.
The remaining eight weeks of the program will include two weeks of vacation, and six weeks on out-rotations of the successful candidate's choice, with available out-rotations including medicine, surgery, cardiology, anesthesia and diagnostic imaging. If preferred, instead of the out-rotations, a six week out block for independent research may be coordinated and scheduled.
The applicant should be aware that the hospital has a dress code.
A certificate of internship is awarded to the candidate upon successful completion of the 12 month training program. Interns participate in the University benefits programs, including health, professional disability and life insurance. Annual vacation and professional liability insurance are provided.
Interested candidates should contact Dr. Elizabeth Rozanski.
The applicant should submit his or her application through AAVC's Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program.
Tufts University is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer.
