Anesthesiology Residency
The Anesthesiology Residency Program (Large and Small Animal) is
a 3-year program designed to provide advanced clinical training
in anesthesiology, pain medicine and related fields leading to ACVA
certification. Residents are required to participate in patient
care, daily rounds, seminars and clinical conferences. Time is provided
for professional development. Residents are encouraged to develop
research projects, develop areas of personal interest and prepare
manuscripts for publication. As part of the training program, the
residents will participate in the clinical teaching of veterinary
students.
Training will occur in The Hospital for Large Animals and Foster
Hospital for Small Animals, at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary
Medicine in North Grafton, MA, which is approximately 40 miles west
of Boston. A major portion of the residency will be spent with anesthesiologists
on clinical rotation. Five weeks each year will be spent on small
animal ICU/emergency medicine service. Specialists in internal medicine,
cardiology, neurology, oncology, critical care/emergency medicine,
ophthalmology, radiology, exotic, zoo and wildlife medicine will
be available to provide advanced training as needed during the residency
period. Faculty in support of this residency have particular interest
in the molecular biology of pain and pain medicine and the use of
anesthesia, sedation and analgesia to enhance laboratory animal
well-being.
Appointments will be made for 12 months with annual renewal based
on satisfactory completion of the previous year. A certificate of
residency is awarded to the candidate upon successful completion
of the training program. A benefits package including health and
professional liability insurance, vacation, and an annual travel
allotment is provided. Participation in the TIAA-CREF retirement
plan (conditional upon completion of the three-year program) is
available.
