Ophthalmology Residency
The ophthalmology residency program at Tufts Cummings School of
Veterinary Medicine is designed to provide in-depth training in
the medical and surgical aspects of clinical veterinary ophthalmology
and to prepare the resident for the successful completion of all
steps of the certification process leading to diplomate status in
the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists after 3 years.
Training will occur in The Hospital for Large Animals and Foster
Hospital for Small Animals, at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary
Medicine in North Grafton, MA, which is approximately 40 miles west
of Boston. Resident duties include inpatient and outpatient clinical
care and primary responsibility for ocular emergency coverage.
Residents are required to participate in rounds, seminars and clinical
conferences and to actively contribute to the instruction of veterinary
students in the hospital clinics.
The residency also provides the opportunity to attend lectures
and rounds at Boston and Worcester's many neighboring human medical
centers. During the 3 year program, residents are required to develop
a research project pertaining to the field of veterinary ophthalmology
and to prepare at least 2 manuscripts to be submitted to peer-reviewed
journals.
Appointments will be made for 12 months with annual renewal based
on satisfactory completion of the previous year. A certificate of
residency is awarded to the candidate upon successful completion
of the training program. A benefits package including health and
professional liability insurance, vacation, and an annual travel
allotment is provided. Participation in the TIAA-CREF retirement
plan (conditional upon completion of the three-year program) is
available.
