Joint Residency in Small Animal Surgery with The Angell Animal Medical Center
The Department of Clinical Sciences at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine (TCSVM), in conjunction with The Angell Animal Medical Center, is offering two residency positions in Small Animal Surgery. Qualifications include graduation from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine and completion of an internship program or equivalent experience.
This program presently utilizes the clinical facilities and surgical caseloads of (1) The Foster Hospital for Small Animals located at TCSVM, 200 Westboro Road, North Grafton, MA and (2) The Angell Animal Medical Center (AAMC), located at 350 South Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA. TCSVM faculty and AAMAC staff are board certified in their respective areas and provide a formidable source of expertise and knowledge for the self-motivated resident.
The residency is a three-year and 2-week program structured to meet the requirements established by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. It provides clinical training and service responsibility; numerous conferences provide additional academic training. In addition, clinical rotations are provided in radiology, anesthesiology, pathology, critical care and small animal medicine. A rotation may be provided at one of the area's human hospitals, depending upon the resident's area of interest. Residents bear the primary responsibility for emergency surgical coverage at both hospitals.
Residents actively participate in the instruction of veterinary students in the hospital clinics, and the spay clinic. Participation in research, leading to submission of one major paper for publication is required during the three-year program. Continuation in the program from year to year is contingent upon satisfactory performance. Semi-annual evaluations of progress are provided to each resident.
A certificate of residency is awarded to the candidate upon successful completion of the training program. Benefits, including partially subsidized medical and dental insurance, life insurance, and disability coverage are offered. Participation in the TIAA-CREF retirement plan (conditional on completion of the three year program) is available. Professional liability coverage is provided. Ten vacation days and 12 holidays are permitted each year. A travel allowance is available to promote resident attendance at professional meetings. Close affiliations with public and private regional medical and biotechnology centers exist.
