About the Small Animal Hospital
Veterinary Services Tufts New England Veterinary Medical Center (TNEVMC) was established in 1979 as the clinical component of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. Its teaching facilities include the Henry and Lois Foster Hospital for Small Animals, which provides veterinary services including specialty referrals and emergency 24-hour care for dogs, cats, and exotic pets including birds, reptiles and small mammals.
At Tufts, we treat animals using a team approach. The team is headed by those faculty and staff clinicians whose areas of specialization are pertinent to the diagnosis and/or treatment of the animal's problems. Other members include residents, interns, students, and technicians, who, under the supervision of clinicians, play an important role in providing patient care and maintaining communication with you and your referring veterinarian.
TNEVMC offers some of the finest medical and surgical care for animals in the nation. Our veterinarians are able to handle complex and difficult diagnoses and treatment utilizing their expertise and the center's advanced equipment. They understand and share your concern for the well-being of your animal.
The Medical Team The staff is composed of faculty veterinarians who have trained in various specialties, many of whom are board-certified in their specialty; residents, who are graduate veterinarians undergoing additional training in specialty areas; veterinary technicians, who perform tests and help with treatments; animal care attendants; and many support personnel, including receptionists, communications personnel, secretaries, and medical records staff.
Educational Mission In one special way, we are different from a private hospital; we are a teaching hospital. Our fourth-year students learn all aspects of animal care by participating in the care and treatment of your pet during the final year of their education. The responsibility for your pet's care, however, rests with the attending veterinarian. All of the students' activities within the hospital are closely directed and supervised by both faculty and resident veterinarians. Your patience and cooperation are greatly appreciated, and you can feel good about helping in the educational process.
