International Wildlife Conservation was a consistent theme throughout
the life of Annelisa Marcelle Kilbourn. Born in Zurich, she had a multi-national
background with upbringing in both Europe and the United States, while
she worked for years in Africa and Southeast Asia. Throughout her career,
Annelisa strove to improve the lives of both people and wildlife. A
1990 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Dr. Kilbourn went on
to receive her DVM from Tufts in 1996. Annelisa joined the Wildlife
Conservation Society’s Field Vet Program in 2000 and led the lowland
gorilla health program in Central Africa. Dr. Kilbourn trained field
teams and investigated the deadly Ebola virus outbreaks. Her work produced
the first proof that gorillas and chimpanzees could be lethally infected
with Ebola, and that the virus was transmissible to humans through hunting
and eating these animals. Annelisa Kilbourn was tragically killed in
a plane crash in Gabon in 2002. We hope that her legacy of wildlife
conservation and world improvement will live on through the programs
she contributed to at Tufts Veterinary School.
