Practicum

The WSSS Practicum is a chance for WSSS students to work in a small group on the integrated assessment of a water resources case study. The goal of the practicum is to expose students to the techniques and thought processes of integrated assessment in order to train them as researchers and professionals. In both 2009 and 2010, the WSSS Practicum was on Elbow Cay in the Bahamas. Prior years had explored water issues local to Tufts Medford campus. The practicum is headed by Rusty Russell of the Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning Department with input from other participating WSSS faculty.

WSSS Student Peter Kelly-Joseph wrote about the 2010 Practicum for the WSSS Newsletter: "Since October, 10 WSSS students have been preparing for this year's Practicum, which took place in March over Tufts’ spring break. The group, led by WSSS faculty Rusty Russell and WSSS John Durant – with generous support from WSSS External Advisory Committee member John Foster E’52, traveled to Elbow Cay off of the island of Abaco in the Bahamas to study coastal pollution and work with a local environmental advocacy group to develop a year-round, volunteer-driven water testing program there.

"Coastal water quality has been identified as an environmental issue of importance to the community of Elbow Cay. The practicum team is working closely with local NGO Friends of the Environment to develop programs that monitor local water quality and educate the public about the importance of clean water in an area almost totally dependent on tourism.

"Goals for the project that will benefit both parties, including the research interests of the Practicum Team and the educational and advocacy goals of Friends and their constituent communities. In short, this year’s practicum will raise awareness of water quality issues on Elbow Cay, launch a resident-directed water quality testing program, and increase awareness of potential issues that relate to local water quality."
