Small airway inflammatory disease (SAID) is a condition that affects a large number of horses and can be hard to diagnose. Although it causes coughing and/or significant exercise intolerance, it's not a horrible disease. In fact, upon diagnosis, you can actually look forward to significant improvement in your horse with proper treatment. You may have heard of heaves. Heaves is a more severe and long-standing form of SAID. We believe that as SAID is better understood and better managed, the occurrence of heaves will be minimized and possibly even eliminated from the horse industry. |
