The building of the Berlin Wall in August 1961 was a turning point in European, and indeed in international, politics. It sealed both the division of Germany and that of Berlin. It made clear that the Soviet Union was not prepared to look on passively while the GDR fell part, and it demonstrated the West's determination to keep West Berlin within its world.
