German 003A is designed to give the student a complete review of basic
German grammar, while enhancing both reading and oral proficiency through
active reading, vocabulary building and mastery of the strong and irregular
verb system.

Learned to read modern German short stories and prose found in newspapers,
letters, and magazines for basic understanding.

Become sensitive to some of the issues and problems of contemporary
life in German- speaking countries.

Become more familiar with recent political events in Germany.

both orally and in writing.

REQUIRED TEXT(S), MATERIALS, GENERAL ASSIGNMENTS
Moeller, et al, KALEIDOSKOP, Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston.
This text is divided into two basic sections: Erster Teil, Lektüre,
and Zweiter Teil, Grammatik. Each Thema has several short readings
and sometimes poems or songs. Students are responsible for preparing
the assigned readings and exercises at home and discussing them in class.
Assigned written exercises are to be submitted according to the Kursplan.
In part two, we will review 1 chapter (Kapitel) per week. Students are
responsible for studying the grammar and preparing the assigned exercises
prior to class. We will also use the www for some special assignments.
LANGUAGE LAB
Each Thema has a group of corresponding "Hörverständnis" exercises
(handout). These exercises are to be done in the Language Lab. In
the basement level of the Olin bldg. Students are to visit the Lab
at least once a week and will not receive lab. credit, unless they have
signed the appropriate sign in sheet. The exercises are to be turned
in weekly.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Five written exams and one oral exam.

Five one page (minimum length) summaries/essays (typed, double spaced,
and with regular margins, i.e. 1in.) Students may choose an article
or other reading from the "Themen" to summarize, or they may discuss
an appropriate topic/question from a "Was meinen Sie?" section of a Thema.
Summaries/essay topics are to be submitted prior to each quiz and should
be chosen from the two most recent "Themen" studied.

Principal parts (A11 - A14): Students are to learn the three main principle
parts (present tense vowel changes where indicated) for three (3)
verbs per class meeting. (No new verbs on exam days).

Video Project: Each student will participate in a small group video project.
Details will be explained during the Semester.
