TITLE: Inversion and Forward Modeling Approaches for Large Scale Geophysical Electromagnetic Measurements SPEAKER: Tarek Habashy AFFILIATION: Schlumberger Research In this presentation we review a number of inversion and forward modeling approaches for large-scale geophysical electromagnetic applications arising in oil exploration, such as single-well logging measurements, surface-to-borehole, cross-well and surface EM. Much of the challenges associated with these types of applications are related to the large computational cost of the forward modeling and the inversion non-uniqueness inherent in the measurements. We will review efficient forward modeling algorithms specifically targeted to our applications and cover some of the regularization approaches that can help in narrowing down the class of solutions that have physical and practical usefulness. If time allows, we will also cover joint physics inversion for the integration of electromagnetic with seismic or pressure measurements.
