Tufts University’s code of conduct and non-discrimination policies are designed to allow all members of the community to study, research, teach, work, and live in an environment free from harassment. Antisemitism, Islamophobia, and other forms of hate will not be tolerated on our campuses. We expect all members of our community to follow these policies, and we have a robust and equitable incident reporting and investigation process to address alleged violations.
Are members of the community aware of conduct expectations?
Yes. Community members are made aware of the expectations during various onboarding events and through communications during the academic year.
What are the potential consequences for violations of university policies?
Information about potential consequences for violations of university policies can be found on the Incident Reporting Process page.
When will we learn about the outcomes of the disciplinary processes involving students alleged to have violated policies?
The outcome of discrimination investigations—including any disciplinary action—remain confidential. As explained on our page detailing our incident reporting and investigation processes, “Due to federal and state privacy laws, and consistent with its longstanding practice, the university does not share information about its investigative findings or sanctions with third parties, including those who are reporting or inquiring on behalf of a Tufts student or employee.”
Is the university stifling free speech by disciplining students and organizations for protesting?
No. Many members of the community have engaged in protest during this academic year and have voiced their opinions on world events and the university’s response. Except in rare cases where after a thorough investigation, the speech was determined to be in violation of our non-discrimination policies, no discipline has arisen for speech during any on-campus protest. In addition, it is important to note that the university enforces its code of conduct in a content-neutral manner.
